Dentures

Modern dentures look natural and are extremely comfortable, but they eventually need replacement. Sometimes this is because the dentures are deteriorating, and other times the patient’s mouth is changing shape. In any case, there comes a point when routine maintenance or a minor adjustment won’t fix the problem. Read on to learn about a few signs that you might be due for a new set of dentures.

Your Dentures Don’t Fit Right

If your dentures are working properly, the friction between them and your gums will hold them in place while you chew and speak. This fit should endure through most everyday activities. If your dentures are falling out or just wiggling too much, it might be time for an adjustment or a replacement.

Your Dentures Interfere with Your Speech

You should have no problem speaking clearly with a good pair of dentures, but they might make talking difficult if they can’t hang on to your gums. You might notice yourself slurring your words or that the appliance just feels like it’s getting in the way. This can be a sign that your dentures need replacement.

Your Dentures Hurt

A properly fitting pair of dentures should be comfortable after the initial acclimation period. If you begin to feel discomfort at the contact points between your dentures and your gums or other tissues, it could be that you need an adjustment or a new set. If you do find sores, lesions, or other troublesome developments on your gums, you should see a dentist immediately.

Your Dentures Appear Damaged or Decayed

Your dentures should appear to be a healthy set of gums and teeth. The teeth should not be loose or excessively cracked or chipped. They might also become discolored by exposure over time to things like wine, coffee, or tea. If the appliance itself breaks or cracks, DIY solutions like superglue are not good ways to fix it. In any case where the dentures appear to be in bad shape, repairs or a new set might be in order.

Good oral hygiene is key to keeping your dentures in working order for as long as possible, but they will eventually need replacement. While any one of the issues listed here can probably be resolved by repairs from your dentist, it is more likely that you’ll need a new pair when several are present at once. Dentures are a great way to restore a smile, and you deserve a fully functional set.
