Dentists consider dental implants to be the best form of tooth replacement available because they mimic real teeth in both appearance and function. This allows them to go unnoticed by casual observers while restoring nearly all of the patient’s chewing force. They also boast an incredible 95% success rate, making them a solid investment in one’s oral health and overall well-being. Here are a few habits to avoid to keep your dental implants working and looking great for life.

Remember Not to Skip Oral Hygiene

Dental implants need healthy gums to be successful, so gum disease is the leading cause of implant failure. Though these artificial teeth are made from high-quality materials that are immune to tooth decay, allowing plaque and food debris to accumulate in the mouth will lead to infections that can result in the loss of implants.

The good news is that dental implants only require the same oral hygiene routine as natural teeth. A proper daily hygiene regimen includes brushing twice and flossing and using antibacterial mouthwash once. It’s also crucial that you see your dentist at least twice a year, but your provider may recommend more if you have dental implants.

If You Have Dental Implants, Tobacco Is Wacko

Healthy gums are necessary for successful dental implants, and tobacco use is absolutely terrible for your oral health in general. While frequent nicotine exposure can leave unsightly yellowish or brownish stains on your implants, this chemical also causes your blood vessels to constrict, limiting blood flow to the gums along with their ability to heal and fight infections. To make matters worse, the gums harden in defense when exposed to smoke, and having to do this frequently can exhaust them, causing them to recede. Kick the smoking habit for healthy dental implants.

Don’t Drink Excessively

On average, dental implant patients require about six months to heal completely after surgery. During this crucial period, the titanium piece of the dental implant will fuse with the surrounding bone structure in the jaw through the natural process of osseointegration. Avoid drinking alcohol during this period to help ensure that your implant develops a strong foundation.

Dental implants should be a lifelong investment. Don’t let these habits wreck your beautifully restored smile.
